Blur is an upcoming 2009 arcade racing video game developed by Bizarre Creations and published by Activision. It features a racing style that incorporates real world cars and locales with arcade style handling and vehicular combat.
Gameplay
Blur follows a career mode where the story plays out through email messages sent through numerous fictional social networks, many of which reference more famous online servers such as 'Inner Tube' (referencing YouTube). Here, the player will encounter many licensed cars ranging from Dodge Vipers to BMW's to Ford Transit Vans, all of which have full damage modelling and a shield bar protecting the car's health bar. There are also some altered versions of familiar urban environments, such as the Los Angeles river half pipe and several parts of London. The below power-ups and combinations will be introduced at a snail's pace to make the user feel acquainted with each one. Depending on the character(s) the player races against or tags along with in team races, they will have their own racing styles, power-up set ups, match types, locales, cars and will be apart of certain fictional servers. As the player races well, performs stunts and uses power-ups in certain ways during races, the player will gain 'fan points', Blur's equivalent to PGR's Kudos system. These points help the player progress through the career and earn them more fans for the user base.
Multiplayer
The game can be played with up to 4 players via splitscreen and the game can be taken online with a maximum of 20. Once online, the player will encounter, what Bizarre Creations have dubbed "the Facebook of racing". Here, the user can create an account and join any of the fictional servers in the career. Each mode can be altered how the player sees fit (number of laps, assists, no. of power-ups, team races etc.) and can share these options with friends they make over the service.
Power-ups
So far, there are only five power-ups used for offensive measures, all of which require much more strategy to use than a conventional Mario Kart power-up.
Shock - This sends out an electromagnetic pulse that can be use to disable cars in the blast radius or used to target a specific driver. This is recommended for use in large packs of cars for maximum benefit.
Barge - This emits a wave of energy out of either side of the user's car to knock another car away. This power-up is best used on the apex of turns or at path junctions to veer the driver off course.
Shunt - A projectile-like weapon that shoots out the front of the car to give the player in front a lurch forwards. It's best used at an angle or near a row of obstacles or in team races to give the team mate a nudge forwards.
Nitro - This item gives the player a short speed boost, as the name suggests. This weapon is usually a main staple in racing games thus far. It's best used for boosting on clear stretches of road for maximum speed.
Mines - Another self explanatory weapon, the mines can be laid out behind the car for other opponents to run into. These must be placed carefully around the course so that it's almost impossible for opponents not to hit them.
Repair - This power-up recovers almost all lost health for the car but is instead represented as a thin yellow haze as opposed to a simple colored box with a symbol and name on it. This is the only non-offensive power-up of the bunch.
All of these power-ups (except for repair) can be stored in three slots on the HUD and can either be used one by one, or combined into one immense power-up for collateral damage ala Resident Evil (mixing herbs). There are reported to be 300 different combinations of these power-ups, thus hinting that more power-ups could be revealed close to the game's launch.
